BOOK PREVIEW

Excerpt

In her dreams, Lainey loved to run and play. Even though she was fifteen (almost sixteen), and too old really for such things, when she was asleep she went right back to childhood – enjoying games of 'fetch' with Buster, her dog; or Frisbee on the beach with her parents, laughing when they ran out of breath and persuaded her to stop long enough to go for an ice cream, long before there was any chance she'd do the same. As she grew older they'd stayed closer to home as travel grew more dangerous, but these were among some of her most precious memories – times she liked to revisit often.

In her dreams, Lainey was whole. Her skin was bright and clear, untouched by any blemish, her smile bright, white, as the breeze pushed her flaxen hair back off her face and the sun shining in the clear blue sky warmed her skin and coaxed freckles into being. She liked to laugh, when she was asleep. She liked to laugh because, on some level, even when asleep, she knew when she woke she'd have forgotten how.
